Rules
A 64-square board, 12 pieces per side, played on the blue squares. Capturing is always mandatory. What changes from one rule set to another is what you may capture, and how a piece becomes a king.
Available
Classic rule
The main rule set on Damas JC.
- Flying king: it travels the whole diagonal.
- Pieces capture forwards and backwards.
- You must capture the maximum. A captured king is worth more than one piece, but less than two.
- A piece that passes through the last row in the middle of a capture is only crowned if it ends there.
- It has endgame rules of its own, such as the “Pé de Galo”.
Available
Brazilian
- Flying king; pieces capture backwards.
- You must capture the largest number of pieces, and a king counts as any other piece.
- 20 moves by each side without a capture or a piece move: draw.
Available
Russian
- Capturing is mandatory, but you choose which capture: there is no majority rule.
- A piece that reaches the last row in the middle of a capture becomes a king at once and keeps capturing.
- 15 moves by each side without progress: draw.
Available
American (checkers)
- Pieces do not capture backwards.
- The king does not fly: it moves and captures one square at a time.
- Being crowned ends the move, even if more captures were available.
At the table
This applies to every rule set.
Clock
Each player has their own time. Whoever runs out of time loses. Some tables add a few seconds after every move.
Draw
You can offer your opponent a draw. If they accept, the game ends in a draw; otherwise the game goes on.
Leaving a game
Abandoning a rated game is a loss. During the first two moves, the game is simply cancelled.
